Whether or not you’ve had chiropractic treatment before, Shelburne Chiropractic offers potential new patients free one-on-one consultations.  Simply call our office at (802) 985-8130 to schedule a consultation appointment.  We understand that pain results in a sense of urgency, and are often able to see patients at a same-day appointment.

Initial Exam

At your first exam, the doctor will take a medical history and discuss how chiropractic treatment can address your health needs.  The doctor will then perform a thorough but non-invasive exam, testing flexibility, muscle strength, and neurological responses.

X-rays may also be taken, so be sure to let the doctor know if you are or may be pregnant.  If you have recent x-rays of your spine, it is helpful to have them released to our office (we can help you with this).

In most cases, if you haven’t had chiropractic before, you will not be adjusted during the initial exam, but you may receive therapies designed to promote healing and relief.  This first appointment usually takes between 45 minutes and an hour.

What to bring to your first appointment:

  • Insurance card, if you have one
  • Recent or relevant x-rays, if you have them (you may also ask your previous provider to release them to our office)
  • Names and dosages of medications or supplements you might be taking
  • Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in

Second Visit: Report of Findings

At the report of findings, the doctor will discuss with you the results of your initial exam.  This will include reviewing your x-rays if they were taken.  The doctor will also discuss how chiropractic care can help address any problems found during your first exam.

At this time, you may receive your first full adjustment.  Most people do not find adjustments to be painful or uncomfortable and many feel some relief right away.  Your doctor of chiropractic has received as many years of education as other doctors and is trained to administer adjustments safely and as gently as possible.

Besides the adjustment, the doctor may also provide you with exercises and stretches to help your healing process, as well as the therapies you may have received at your first appointment.

Finally, the doctor will go over a plan of treatment so you know what to expect in the days and weeks ahead.

Third Visit and Beyond: Treatment and Maintenance

Often, for the first few weeks of your chiropractic care, the doctor will want to see you 2 or 3 times a week to establish and reinforce your treatment.  These appointments are brief but personally focused, and usually take between 15 and 30 minutes.

Consistent adjustments during this time help get your body used to being properly aligned.  Patients often feel relief soon after beginning treatment, but as with many other treatments, it is essential to keep up with your care even after that initial relief.  This helps ensure that your recovery is long lasting.  You can also use this time to ask questions or discuss any other concerns with the doctor.

A word about maintenance:

With many specialists, after you have your health concern addressed, you may not see the specialist again for a long time, if at all.  Many people think of the chiropractor as a back specialist, but your chiropractor is much more than just that!  Keeping up with your chiropractic care is part of your plan for optimal health.  Just as you see your primary care physician and dentist regularly, it is ideal for chiropractic patients to see their chiropractor regularly.  Your doctor will help you establish a maintenance schedule that works for you and keeps you healthy.
